Better Readers Make Better Writers

In 1993, Karen Daniel, a grad student in English at UC Riverside, completed her thesis. An abstract of that thesis can be found at http://wac.colostate.edu/theses/record.cfm?thesisID=19. Directions for ordering a copy of the complete thesis can also be found at that site.

For her thesis, Ms. Daniel looked at writing by 775 high school students over a three years. She looked at 46 variables associated with the English/Language Arts curriculum at that high school. What she found is that reading ability is the strongest indicator of writing ability.

That's where I got the idea that better readers make better writers.
